Reimagining Learning in Moodle with AI

How organisations can lift engagement, simplify course creation, and modernise their learning experience

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the way we design and deliver learning and the exciting part is that these tools are no longer reserved for tech teams or advanced users. At mylearningspace, we’ve been exploring what AI can practically do for organisations using Moodle, and how it can help teams build better courses, faster and with more creativity.

This article shares the key ideas from our recent presentation at the Australian MoodleMoot, where we demonstrated real examples of how AI can enhance Moodle content, streamline administration, and open new possibilities for learner engagement.

Moodle’s built-in AI is evolving

Moodle now includes native AI capabilities, giving organisations more flexibility in how and where AI tools appear across their site. Current features allow teams to choose the AI model, select which features they want to activate, and decide where AI prompts should be made available. Additional capabilities are on the horizon, such as more personalisation for learners, pre-grading assistance, and support for creating activities and courses.

These developments signal a shift: AI won’t replace thoughtful learning design, but it will become an essential support tool for it.

AI plugins are expanding what’s possible

The Moodle ecosystem is rapidly embracing AI-powered enhancements. There are an ever growing list of AI plugins available to assist with a range of tasks from content creation, to grading to learner support.

These technologies help remove bottlenecks and open doors for richer, more engaging learning experiences.

Custom GPTs: Your new learning design assistants

One of the most exciting developments in the AI space is the ability to build your own custom GPTs. These can be tailored to your processes, brand voice, and specific learning needs. The result is a set of AI “team members” who support key aspects of your workflow.

Some practical examples include:

Data Analyst GPT

Interprets Moodle report exports, identifies trends, and produces clear visual summaries — ideal for learning managers and administrators wanting quick insights without wrestling with spreadsheets.

Marketing & Communications GPT

Transforms simple announcements into polished messages in a range of tones, helping teams keep communications fresh, consistent, and on-brand.

Change Catalyst GPT

Supports teams managing organisational change by reframing data into compelling stories, brainstorming engagement ideas, and helping reflect on what’s working.

Screen Assistant

Provides instant guidance based on what’s visible on your screen — perfect for Moodle admins navigating setup and configuration tasks.

Fresh Eyes GPT

Acts as a sounding board, offering feedback, inspiration, and alternative ways to approach content or design challenges.

These GPTs empower teams to work smarter, lighten creative load, and improve consistency across the learning environment.

AI for content creation: Faster, fresher, more engaging

Generative AI can transform the way organisations create and refresh Moodle content, especially when engagement is a top priority.

1. Text-to-Media

AI can generate images, audio, video, animations, and other visual assets customised to your exact scenario or learning objective. This gives designers more creative control than traditional stock libraries.

2. Chunking & Microlearning

AI helps break complex material into smaller, digestible pieces and can generate nudges or reinforcement activities to keep learners engaged.

3. Compliance & Policy Learning

AI makes it easier to convert compliance-heavy content into meaningful stories, realistic scenarios, and targeted examples for different audiences, such as managers versus staff.

4. Proofreading & Polish

AI can quickly review content for clarity, consistency, grammar, and tone — helping teams deliver more professional and learner-friendly courses.

5. Scenario-Based Learning

With AI-generated characters, dialogue, and branching decisions, scenario creation becomes significantly faster. Teams can create realistic workplace situations at scale, without needing specialist design tools.

We’re only at the beginning

AI isn’t here to replace your learning team — it’s here to amplify it. Whether you’re designing training for frontline staff, managers, or specialised professionals, generative AI can help you work faster, unlock new creative possibilities, and deliver more engaging learning experiences.

At mylearningspace, we’re already integrating these tools into our projects and helping clients do the same. If you’re interested in exploring how AI can support your Moodle site — from content design to administration and automation — we’d love to chat
