Understanding roles in Moodle Workplace

One of the key benefits of Moodle Workplace is the ability to have multiple iterations of your organisation’s learning management system sitting on a single installation.

This is a major plus when overseeing learning for a group of related organisations, if an organisation has different divisions that engage in very different types of learning, or if an organisation wants to reach multiple audiences (staff, contractors, customers, suppliers, resellers) with different versions of their LMS that are customised to provide a tailored learning and training experience.

In addition to the roles and permissions of core Moodle, it is important to understand specialist roles in Moodle Workplace.

Moodle Workplace is cost-effective to operate as it gives organisations centralised control and an end to unnecessary duplication of infrastructure and workloads, but with the opportunity to delegate management and administration tasks to within each company, division or franchise.

Compared to Moodle LMS, Workplace offers specialist roles including:

Certification manager: Allows the creation and management of certifications within the current tenant and allocates users to them.

Dynamic rules manager: Allows the creation and management of dynamic rules within the current tenant.

Organisation structure manager: Allows the creation and management of jobs, positions, and departments within the current tenant.

Program manager: Allows the creation and management of programs within the current tenant and allocates users to them.

Report builder manager: Allows the creation and management of custom reports within the current tenant.

Tenant administrator: Assigned automatically to the tenant admin in the context of their course category.

Tenant administrator in course category: This is effectively the tenant manager role, which is assigned automatically to the tenant admin in the context of their course category.

Tenant user: Assigned automatically to all tenant users in the context of their course category.

Additionally it is possible for the site admin to create entirely new roles to address specific roles required by the organisation such as those for guests and auditors.
