Powering Industry Learning at Scale

National Broadband Network

Overview

The National Broadband Network (NBN Co Limited) was established in 2009 by the Commonwealth of Australia as a Government Business Enterprise (GBE) with a clear purpose: to design, build and operate a wholesale broadband access network for Australia.

NBN Co provides wholesale services to Retail Service Providers (RSPs), who then deliver internet plans to households and businesses nationwide. The company’s mission is bold yet simple – to elevate Australia by connecting people and powering progress. This vision rests on the delivery of reliable, fast, resilient, and secure broadband.

With a workforce of up to 4,000 people and a diverse customer base spanning the country, NBN Co knew that effective learning and development would play a crucial role in achieving its mission.

Before partnering with mylearningspace, NBN’s approach to training was fragmented and inconsistent. The organisation primarily relied on face-to-face workshops, PowerPoint presentations, and supporting documentation.

NBN

“The level of support provided by the mylearningspace team during the implementation of Moodle at NBN was impressive and appreciated. The team was proactive and communicative, ensuring that all necessary steps were taken to facilitate a smooth implementation process.”

THE learning landscape

The Learning Landscape Before Change

Before partnering with mylearningspace, NBN primarily relied on face-to-face workshops, PowerPoint presentations, and supporting documentation.
This approach created significant challenges:

key barriers

Barriers in the Learning Ecosystem

For an organisation responsible for a critical part of Australia’s digital infrastructure, solving these learning challenges was a top priority.

Moodle Workplace Implementation

1. Conduct deep analysis of training and stakeholder requirements.

2. Shape platform architecture and create customised workflows.

3. Multi-tenancy for external partners, giving each RSP a dedicated space.

4. Migrate data quickly and securely from legacy systems.

5. Provide hands-on training for administrators and end users.

Partnering with Premium Partner mylearningspace

NAATI’s decision to continue working with mylearningspace was a natural progression, as the partnership was already well-established during the organisation’s use of Totara. While the choice pre-dated the current team, mylearningspace’s longstanding familiarity with NAATI’s systems, needs and operational context made them a reliable and trusted partner to guide the transition and support the expansion of learning and development across the organisation.

The decision to partner with mylearningspacewas not just about technology—it was about expertise, collaboration, and trust.

results and impact
Looking ahead

NBN is continuing to evolve its learning ecosystem. Emerging priorities include:

  • A Digital Literacy Framework to uplift workforce skills in AI, data, automation, and security.
  • Integration of AI and adaptive learning for personalised training pathways.
  • Gamification, simulation, and VR experiences to further engage learners and boost retention.

The partnership with mylearningspace has provided a strong foundation for these future innovations.
