The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) is Australia’s national standards and certifying authority for translators and interpreters – responsible for setting, maintaining and promoting the high standards that underpin quality language services across the country. As a public, not-for-profit company jointly owned by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments, NAATI plays a vital role in ensuring the sector is equipped to meet the evolving needs of Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse society.
Their mission is two-fold:
This case study explores how NAATI modernised onboarding and performance development, introduced on-demand learning for contractors, expanded preparation resources for test candidates, and began leading sector-wide professional development to strengthen capability, compliance and support across its workforce and stakeholders.
“I have used Moodle across a few institutions as a trainer or coordinator, and enrolled in my fair share of short courses. This has been by far the most clearly structured, straightforward, user-friendly and visually pleasing course I have seen.”
Sarah Lattimore, LSP Project Officer
Before implementing Moodle Workplace, Dermalogica already had a robust focus on education.
Training was largely in-person, with learners attending sessions face-to-face.
While effective, the team recognised the need to make learning more accessible and flexible, ensuring all learners could engage in ways that suited them, no matter their location.
The challenges across NAATI’s training and development processes affected staff, contractors, candidates and the wider industry in distinct ways. For full-time and part-time staff, onboarding and PDP requirements were met, but the manual, PDF-based system was slow, repetitive and inefficient, adding unnecessary administrative burdens for employees and managers.
NAATI’s decision to continue working with mylearningspace was a natural progression, as the partnership was already well-established during the organisation’s use of Totara. While the choice pre-dated the current team, mylearningspace’s longstanding familiarity with NAATI’s systems, needs and operational context made them a reliable and trusted partner to guide the transition and support the expansion of learning and development across the organisation.
NAATI’s shift from Totara to Moodle Workplace was driven by a need to modernise its learning ecosystem and take advantage of more advanced, flexible and scalable functionality. One of the primary motivators was the ability to access the most up-to-date Moodle features. This meant NAATI could benefit from ongoing improvements, new capabilities and a more contemporary user experience.
Another significant factor was Moodle Workplace’s multi-tenancy architecture, which allowed NAATI to cleanly separate internal staff learning from external stakeholder training. This structure made it far easier to tailor content, control access and create distinct learning environments for staff, contractors, test candidates and practitioners.
Moodle Workplace also offered major enhancements in content creation and learning delivery. The built-in integration with H5P provided a more intuitive and interactive way to design engaging learning materials, greatly simplifying the creation process for internal teams. Added to this were notable improvements in reporting and dynamic rules, giving NAATI far better visibility over learner activity, compliance, and progress, while also allowing for automation of tasks that previously required manual intervention.
Together, these benefits made Moodle Workplace a more powerful, efficient and future-proof solution – positioning NAATI to meet the growing needs of its workforce, contractors, candidates and the broader interpreting and translating community.
mylearningspace played a key role in supporting NAATI’s transition to Moodle Workplace, guiding the organisation through a structured and collaborative implementation plan. Their team assisted in setting up multiple tenants to cleanly separate internal and external learning environments and provided expert advice on configuring permissions at the course category level, ensuring that specific courses were visible only to the appropriate tenant.
This support gave NAATI the clarity, confidence and technical foundation needed to effectively manage a multi-audience learning ecosystem.

Looking ahead, NAATI sees significant potential to further leverage Moodle Workplace by creating a two-way integration with our main customer management system.
