Getting started with Scenario based e-learning

You may have come across scenario based e-learning in our news feed, and if you haven’t it’s not too late to become familiar with it. If you’ve been looking for a method to deliver material that is relevant, timely and engaging,  scenario based e-learning may be the answer you’ve been looking for. If like me, you’ve sat through e-learning that was a bit boring, you’ll become of a fan of scenario based cases for e-learning. We show you why.

Let’s take compliance training as an example. Compliance training is an important of the business and equally important for the employer to understand their role and responsibilities to the business. I recently had to do compliance training and found myself scrolling through pages and pages of words with a few questions thrown in as assessment. In my case, the material was dry as was the method of delivery. I felt a little resentment and that it was taking my time away from my real work. Maybe this sounds familiar.

So how would scenario based e-learning turn this experience around?

Scenario based e-learning brings real life situations to the learner.

How many of us have taken their laptop to a pub or a café for a quick catch with a friend after work? Many of us, right? Taking that real life situation into e-learning makes it relevant to the learner and provides context to their role and responsibilities in maintaining compliance for the business.

If the learner understands the context, they will remember it both in their working and long-term memory. When designing the scenario’s for your e-learning choose scenario’s that are:

  • Realistic: the more relevant to the learner the more relatable it will be. When you understand the challenges your learner faces the choices you make for your scenarios will be relevant to their everyday working life.
  • Interactive: scenarios that are interactive enhance the realism of the learning. Including interactive elements such as dialogue or even an avatar allows the learner to make choices in solving the problem provided in the scenario.

Scenario based elearning is a great choice for delivering skill training and reinforcing knowledge. The use of videos and realistic storylines based on the learner’s work environment and challenges allows the learner to use their existing knowledge to create solutions with the information they acquire through the elearning. Scenario based e-learning is learner centric allowing the learner to reflect on the learning points and improve their weaker skills while drawing on their key strengths.
