What is a learning management system?

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software platform which facilitates the management and flexible delivery of content for web-based learning. It enables the administration, documentation, assessment, tracking and reporting of educational content and training programs, providing organisations with a cost effective method to fulfil their operational, compliance and training requirements.

What are the benefits of a learning management system to our organisation?

Organisational benefits of implementing a learning management system include improved distribution of learning, excellent return on investment, ease of use, business impact, assessment capabilities, reporting capabilities and flexible learning options.

What things should our organisation consider before investing in a LMS?

Investing in a LMS can be a difficult and time-consuming process for any decision maker. For reasons of both time and money, making the right decision the first time around is highly desirable. We recommend you consider organisational need and budget for a LMS, key staff for success, system scalability, user capability and vendor track record.

Is there anything that may prevent us from bringing the system in-house or moving to another provider at any stage in the future?

No. With the right expertise, the learning management system software and its data is transferrable to another host server. You are not locked into a vendor.

Where do we signup to your newsletter?

You can subscribe to our monthly newsletter via the Newsletter subscription block located on most pages of our website or go to our newsletter subscription form.

Hosting

What does your managed hosting service include?

What are the differences between standard and premium hosting?

What is the similarities and differences between Moodle and Totara?

We normally use commercial software, why should we use open source software?

Moodle is freely available, why should we engage your services?

Are you an official Totara Partner?

Does our organisation need to engage a Partner?

Can we upgrade to a bigger hosting plan?

Can we downgrade to a smaller hosting plan?

Can we use our own web domain?

Can we have an SSL certificate for secured logins?

What does your managed hosting service include?

Our managed hosting service ensures your learning management system resides in a secure, stable and highly available environment. This includes a Services Agreement that states our quality of service. We take care of the initial software installation and configuration, and moving forward, we take care of optimisation, securitisation, monitoring and response, backups and upgrades. This allows you and your staff to focus on core business.

What are the differences between standard and premium hosting?

Standard hosting is most suited to the education sector and includes an installation of the world’s most popular learning management system software: Moodle and video tutorials.

Premium hosting is designed to meet the specific requirements of corporate and government sector and uses a truly enterprise level software: Totara LMS. Premium hosting also includes data migration from another host, web domain registration, SSL certificate, custom branding, annual subscription to the Totara software agreement, account manager, community portal access, help documentation and tutorials, monthly webinars, test and staging environment, input toward development roadmap and priority bug fixes.

Both standard and premium hosting plans include data backups, upgrades, system configuration, optimisation, security hardening and a SLA.

What is the similarities and differences between Moodle and Totara?

Both Moodle and Totara are open source software and learning management systems.

Moodle is the world’s most popular learning management system software designed using sound education principles that help educators create effective online learning. It is intuitive, customisable and scalable software. There are numerous inbuilt tools for communication, collaboration, assessment and reporting.

Totara is a distribution of Moodle. It has all the features of Moodle software plus advanced functionality designed especially for workplace learning in the corporate and government sectors. Additional features include learning plans, program management, team management and a custom report builder. Totara is developed in lock-step with Moodle – this means your organisation will continue to benefit from new and enhanced Moodle and Totara features in a single software solution.

We normally use commercial software, why should we use open source software?

Open source software is released under GNU Public Licence which gives your organisation permission to modify the application code. This gives your organisation the freedom and flexibility to customise the software to suit your specific requirements. The open source philosophy promotes communities of developers, educators and business folk who actively collaborate to make software that is stable, secure, scalable and exceptionally good. Moreover, there are no software licence fees or vendor lock-ins typically associated with commercial software.

Moodle is freely available, why should we engage your services?

We are Moodle experts and know the software inside-out. Moreover, we are highly qualified, experienced and respected in our field. We have been actively involved with the Moodle Community since 2005. We have acted as mentor and assessor for the internationally recognised Moodle Teacher Certification program and are a proud member of the ‘Particularly Helpful Moodlers’ and ‘Quality Assurance Testers’ groups at moodle.org. In fact, we organised the Australian Moodle Conference in 2008 and make an annual donation to contribute toward ongoing software development.

Are you an official Totara Partner?

Yes. We are a Totara LMS Gold Partner for the Asia-Pacific region.

Does our organisation need to engage a Partner?

No. However, the benefits of engaging a Partner include gaining access to the experience and expertise of a company who has experience with successful enterprise deployments. Moreover, a Partner gets priority bug fixes and can provide direct input regarding feature enhancements, on behalf of clients, for directors and developers to consider for the software roadmap.

Can we upgrade to a bigger hosting plan?

Yes. Your organisation can upgrade to a bigger plan at any stage. The cost will be calculated as the price difference between the two plans applied as a monthly pro-rata for the period remaining on the current hosting period.

Can we downgrade to a smaller hosting plan?

No, not during a current hosting period. Your organisation needs to estimate the total number of unique users for a 12-month period. Your organisation can downgrade to a smaller plan upon renewal of the hosting for a subsequent year.

Can we use our own web domain?

Yes. If you organisation owns a web domain and wishes to use this for your LMS, we can make that happen. If your organisation currently uses the said domain eg. http://domain.com for other purposes, such as a website, and intends to continue to do so, we will need to put your LMS at a sub-domain of the main domain eg. http://lms.domain.com.

Alternatively, we can register and manage a domain on behalf of your organisation and use this for your LMS eg. http://newdomain.com . We provide this service for $100 per domain per year on Standard Hosting plans and at no cost for Premium Hosting plans.

Can we have an SSL certificate for secured logins?

Yes. Typically, when users login to a web-based system, their username:password is transmitted in clear text across the internet, which may be intercepted and interpreted by a third-party with malicious intent. Using an SSL certificate for authentication is considered more secure as username:password is encrypted for transmission, which means intercepted data is virtually impossible to decrypt by a third-party. We provide this service for $500 per domain per year on Standard Hosting plans and at no cost for Premium Hosting plans.
