Moodle LMS

Moodle LMS

Moodle is a learning management system (LMS) - an Open Source educational software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities.

Moodle has a large and diverse user community with over 750,000 registered users on moodle.org, speaking over 75 languages in 200 countries. This includes developers, educators, system administrators and business users.

Moodle is provided freely as Open Source software (under the GNU Public License). This means Moodle is copyrighted, but the software can be edited and customised to suit your organisational needs. Due to this, Moodle has an active web community of developers who contribute additional features to the application as requested by educators, administrators and business.

The word 'Moodle' was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It is also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such, it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.

Benefits include:

  • Promotion of social constructionist pedagogy through activities such as blog, chat, forums, messaging, rss and wiki.
  • Enables user activity monitoring, assessment, feedback and gradebook functionality.
  • Suitable for 100% online education as well as endorsing a blended learning approach by supplementing face-to-face classes.
  • Simple, lightweight, efficient, flexible, highly compatible and easy to install on almost any platform that supports PHP and only requires one database.
  • It is freely available. No cost to buy. This reduces the total cost of ownership, thus enables your organisation to invest money in things that matter most, like LMS Consultancy, LMS Hosting, LMS Training and Support.
